This thread is for the discussion of anything relating to AP statistics. Discuss the class, the exam, the homework, the content etc.
About the Subject:
Statistics is the practice or science of collecting and analyzing numerical data in large quantities, especially for the purpose of inferring proportions in a whole from those in a representative sample. The subject is not as math intensive as it is logic intensive. Algebra knowledge should suffice for the understanding of Statistics.
About the Class:
Instructor: Ms. Eloja
AP Statistics is probably one of the best classes offered at Eastwood Academy. Unlike other classes at Eastwood, Statistics is really like a college class. The way Ms. Eloja structured the class and organized the resources will usually over-prepare anyone that takes the class seriously. The tests are timed perfectly and the content of these tests and quizzes provide a checking system unlike any other at Eastwood. The quizzes and tests pragmatically test your knowledge and skills on the Statistics topics covered in class making it really hard for anyone to pass without knowing the content. Grade inflation does not exist here. Because the statistics topics build up upon each other, you can not not learn a topic and expect to pass. The workload is manageable and it is not overwhelming, the classwork AND homework is meaningful because it is hands-on/practice based not theory/define based. The homework is also not frustrating or negatively hard, concepts may be hard to understand but there are enough resources to go through with it and learn.
The "Stats: Modeling the World" Book used in class is one of the best didactic books for AP Statistics. The content is not hard to understand because the concepts are conveyed along with real world examples and simple vocab. After that, graphs, pictures, examples, and walk-throughs complement the content of the book. Reading one chapter a week, and seldom two a week, is manageable given how easy it is to read them.
This is the AP Stats Textbook.
Ms. Eloja rarely does lecture type teaching so don't expect to learn stats DURING class. Ms. Eloja may give a review of a reading assignment with a powerpoint, but will she do old-school style out-dated lecture-intense teaching? Nope. Just like in a college class. The beauty of this is that we engage in discussion about statistics and we practice a lot during school. Not only that, we were able to take about 6 or 7 mock exams... Many students score 4s and 5s and rarely do people fail the exam.
About the Exam:
AP Statistics is considered one of the harder AP's in terms of passing. Given the intensity of the class. I wouldn't recommend wasting your money on a review book (And even if you do, don't buy TPR) because Ms. Eloja uses 3 books and several other resources that suffice. You will already be provided with the resources you need.
The exam is about three hours long and has two parts – multiple choice and free response. Each section of the exam is worth 50% of the final exam grade.
I do not recommend self-studying for this exam as the class is amazing when it comes to prep. It would be better to take this class than to self-study.
Resources:
Don't even worry about it. Seriously... you will have too many high quality resources at your disposal.
If you are stubborn and want to still self-study for it (Or feel in the need of getting a perfect score on the exam): www.appracticeexams.com/ap-statistics
